Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Learning Target: Estimate the mean and median from a histogram

Warm Up: p. 91 #4 a and b

Goals:
• Go over the MIQ
• Work on Investigation 2 calendar work with your group

HW: Finish the Investigation 2 calendar work your group decided on.

Reminder: L1I2 MIQ tomorrow. Be able to complete a problem like what’s in the investigation. In order to retake the MIQ, make sure you have completed everything from the ENTIRE row labeled Investigation 2 including all the investigation work and the MIQ practice problem.

Reflection: The formula for finding the position of the median is (n+1)/2. That means you get a position and count up the data points until you get to that position. That number is your median. For example, if the number of values is 9 then the position of the median is (9+1)/2 which is 5. Then count up the data set until you reach the 5th value. If the data set is: 5, 7, 9, 11, 14, 22, 32, 33, 44, then the median is 14.

Friday, August 13, 2010

Learning Target: Calculate & interpret the mean and median (from a list of values & frequency table)

Note: Pick up your note card from the first day on the side table. On the back, tell me if you have any medical concerns or allergies. If you have no medical concerns or allergies, please write “No medical concerns or allergies.”

Warm Up: When an object is dropped from some high spot, the distance it falls is related to the time it has been falling by the formula d=4.9t^2, where t is the time in seconds and d is distance in meters. Suppose a ball falls 250 meters down a mineshaft. Find how long, to the nearest second, it takes the ball to fall this distance.

Goals:
• Get your MIQ out of the blue bin and begin working on it. You may use a calculator if you need to. It should be silent since the MIQ is a mini quiz. On every graph for the x-axis, make the minimum 0, maximum 70, and scale 5. On the y-axis for the histogram, make the minimum 0, maximum 6, and scale 1. On the y-axis for the frequency histogram, make the minimum 0, maximum 3, and scale 0.05. If you have not set yours up this way, please redo it on the other side of the middle line and explain why you set it up as you did originally.
• Fill Out group calendar for Investigation 2.
• Begin calendar work.

HW: Finish the Investigation 2 calendar work your group decided on.

Reflection: To find the mean and median on the calculator, put in all the data into list 1 under stat. Then hit second mode to get back to the clear screen. Hit second stat to go to the list menu, scroll over to math, and select either mean or median. Make sure to type L1 after the ( so the calculator knows where to pull the data from.

Calendar Changes

Hey guys! Good job today in class. I really enjoyed the discussion. Make sure you are participating though, or I will not hesitate to remove you from my class. Don't forget to come copy my Lesson 1 vocabulary if you want. If you want to update your calendar, here is tentatively what next week looks like:

16th: Finish L1I1 MIQ –15 minutes & no extra time (talk about comments side), Fill Out Group Calendar for L1I2 to 2nd MIQ

17th: Calendar work on Investigation 2

19th: Quiz Review Problems

20th: L1 Quiz – 40 minutes & no extra time

Learning Target: Create and analyze dot plots, histograms, and relative frequency histograms as well as describe the shape of a distribution

Warm Up: The following people need to put the following problems from last night’s hw on the board. Please write clearly and large enough for everyone to see. Show all work.

Lizeth: p. 80 #6a           Angela: p. 80 #6b            Harley: p. 81 #7a

Rashid: p. 81 #7b          Adrienne: p. 81 #7c      Niki: p. 81 #7d

Max: p. 82 #8a – sketch the histogram from your calculator

Lauren: write up the steps from your calculator to get the histogram on p.82 #8a

Jasmine: p. 90 #1c          Megan Sto.: p. 90 #1 relative frequency histogram

Goals:
• Go over the HW answers and fix any mistakes.
• Discuss the STM.
• MIQ

HW: NO HW!!!!!

Reflection: You need a calculator at home to complete homework assignments. Today, several of you came to class unprepared because of this issue. If anyone finds a good online version, please notify me. I will start taking points on HW if I have to, but I would rather my students responsibly finish their assignments since math HW is not often graded in college, but is expected. Part of my job is to prepare you for the transition to college, so please start practicing good habits now.

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Learning Target: Create and analyze dot plots, histograms, and relative frequency histograms as well as describe the shape of a distribution

Write down in your notebook the learning target (the title of the blog), and the warm up.

Warm Up: p.102 #29 without a calculator

Goals:
• Check yesterday’s hw with the group. Everyone needs the same answer. I will come around and check the answers from one person in the group. That person leads the hw check discussion. I do not expect perfection. I do expect effort. If someone came with no work completed on a problem, they have nothing to contribute and that person puts the group behind. This is NOT OK. At the very least, if you are confused, write a few questions you need answered so you can proceed on the problem.
• Finish Investigation 1 work.

HW: Finish everything except the STM. We are going to go over it tomorrow before the MIQ.

Reflection: We talked today about when you describe the distribution to be sure to include the shape (skewed or normal), center (mean or median), and spread (range). We also discussed that a number needs to be given for the center and the spread even if it’s an estimate. If you need help problem, consult your vocabulary because I made it very extensive or email me before 9pm.

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Learning Target: Construct Histograms

Write down in your notebook the learning target (the title of the blog), and the warm up.

Warm Up: p. 101 #26  I will ask people to present their answers to the warm up daily. You may not pass, so be ready.

Goals: Finish collecting penny data and make histogram and complete p.75 TATS

HW: Start on p.76 and do #1-5

Reminder: First MIQ tomorrow. Be able to complete a problem like what’s in the investigation. In order to retake the MIQ, make sure you have completed everything from the ENTIRE row labeled Investigation 1 including all the investigation work and the MIQ practice problem. I may change this to first thing on Friday. Don’t count on it though.

Reflection: We made histograms from our dominate and non-dominate hand penny data, discussed known vocabulary, and brainstormed that if the data is in numerical order it is easier to analyze.

Tuesday, August 10, 2010
