Learning Target: Compass Review – Solve systems with elimination

Warm Up: p. 120 #23 – look at the example if you need help.

The trick with elimination is that you are trying to multiply both sides of one or both equations by a number so that when the equations are added together one of the variables cancels out. After that, the rest of the process is a lot like substitution. You solve for the remaining variable, and then plug it back into one of the original equations to solve for the other variable.

With any system you can check your work by plugging in the solution into both original equations and seeing if both sides of the equal sign are equal. A caution with this though… sometimes if you only plug your solution into one equation it may work, but it may not work in the other equation, so that is why you should check it in both.

Goals:
• Check your answers with the board. Mark the questions you missed. I will answer a few before we begin today’s work.

Read and review the examples on p. 118. Copy the examples and any bold text into your notebook for future reference and studying.

Practice: p. 120-121 #20-24 even, 26-28, 30-31, 35-36, 42

HW: Finish the practice work. No work – No credit. I will take a grade it tomorrow.
